We have a couple of separate comics in the works at the moment, one of them being 'Butterfly Gate' which will be an episodic Web-comic (trying to get a couple of issues in the bag before we release anything) and 'Porcelain' this is going to be a full graphic novel. as soon as the pre-work is done I'll be diving head first into that for a few months hopefully to get it out by early next year.
I'll post up some details on Porcelain when Ben and i have our next head bang about it all. i cant wait to show some of this stuff off and get stuck in on actual pages, Mr Read has crafted a beautiful story and we've been talking and brain storming it for nigh two years now so I've told myself to give it nothing less than my A game. so lets hope i don't disappoint!

Warm Up: Went All The Way

<img style="display:block; I’m actually still playing with some other bits in my spare time for practice but I’ll save that until I’ve finished it, so consider this the first part of a True Grit MB extension.
I’ve wanted to post this since the comic came out but I’ve held it off for a while, mainly because I’ve had a bunch of work on, and general forgetfulness…tsk, I could talk about this type of thing until your eyes melt out of your skull so I’ll try to keep this as brief but interesting!

Anyway, at the end of the project I was most pleased with the Cover, the True Grit interior had a tight, tight deadline (3 weeks to be exact) and the cover was due after the interior. Thinking I had at least a day or two before working on the cover I did the human thing and went to bed. Alas no sooner had I got into bed I had an email saying the cover needed to be in ASAP so I slumped back up to the desk and got brain storming.
From the first email about the Job, one desire of the writer was for the cover to emulate that this was All about Mattie and her tale of revenge. One pieces of reference handed to me was a cover of an old ‘Dime Novel’ with a young western type girl holding a rifle (pictured below). Also the Original Cover art of the Charles Portis Novel (Also pictured below) depicted Mattie holding a rifle too, so from the start having Mattie holding a gun was always a must.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 211px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-vASJxxp8LNc/Tl4lSXy6WrI/AAAAAAAABAY/873USBwDXz0/s320/Miss-Annie-Oakley-peerless-wing-shot.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5646991980324608690" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 211px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-fUvO2uS5DW4/Tl4e_-F3u5I/AAAAAAAAA_4/BakLlml9eec/s320/true_grit_book_thumb.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5646985067117394834" />

This here is one of my first character sketches I’d drawn of Mattie, so the set up was always in mind.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 193px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Sj6BGx-Xsz8/Tl4fPL7eKZI/AAAAAAAABAA/WvD3UiyfMT0/s320/Cover%2Bsketch.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5646985328529910162" />
In the film I loved the way Mattie wore the coat and Hat of her father, so not only did it emphasise how young she was but it had that personal element of Mattie on a journey for her father’s justice. So I absolutely had to draw her in her whole adventure get up. Also with the big hat I got to give her a cool cast of shadow over her eyes
Below you should find the two variations of the cover I’d initially drawn up. This was for some variety to show Paramount but also I had reasoning behind them. The Buffalo Rifle cover was supposed to emulate the rifle that exacts the final blow into Chaney, again going back the original Portis novel, the cover art has Mattie holding said rifle.
Also I have to note that in the riffle cover Mattie suffered a bit of a bucktooth, also you can see the original eye shadow which was removed for the final cover, it worked in the Black and white and sketches but with colour I just couldn't seem to pull off that lower lid catching the light.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 208px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-u2XEoN3WJZU/Tl4fcTLdcvI/AAAAAAAABAI/RE5-uqwC4eo/s320/Cover%2Bfinal%2B2%2B.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5646985553814319858" />
Then there is the Dragoon Pistol cover, this was actually my favourite of the two, from the beginning the Gun is massive in her hand so I think it suits her oversized coat and hat… unlike the rifle which was big on her but the pistol looked bigger and had more symmetry to the whole set up o the art I think. And there you have it.
<img style="display:block; and for the first Time my partner in crime Laura Trinder.
This like True Grit MB had a very tight deadline so some ongoing projects had to be respectfully put on hold until I'd completed that. unfortunately Butterfly Gate (written by Ben Read) was one of them, however now I'm back in full swing, finishing off the inks to episode one and doing some colour process tests.
The sketches posted on here are the main characters of Butterfly Gate, these were mainly for the sake of practising my inking. I'm by no means a great inker that's for damn sure, I really do enjoy inking with a brush and try to keep my sketchy pencil style with my brush. still loots to improve but... practice practice practice!

?

www.gonnabemint.com

(don't worry, it's not a spam link)

Sketch: When I Grow Up

<img style="display:block; I did my first sign and sketch session last week at Orbital Comics in Leicester Square last week (sorry forgot to post info about that..nerves) but before the session Luke from Stuff Magazine asked me to do a sketch for the online magazine and to film it with some flashy tech. so here it is the ...."Stuff Bot".... literally did it on the spot and a short time to film so that my excuse for any mess. anyway Enjoy:
Stuff Bot Sketch Vid

Also the guys at Orbital where kind enough get me on their Podcast show, i had a really good laugh with them for a few minutes while they asked me some stuff about how i got on True Grit and general who what when and why about me. unfortunately the sound quality ended up pretty naff so hopefully going in to do another quick Q&A soon so i'll post up that i they ever let me back on for a mumble.
I had a really awesome first time sketch session at Orbital on the behalf of the Guys at the CataWiki site so a nice little shout out to them. but i'll go into that session more in another post because i need some space to babble on about that properly. meanwhile, thanks to those who showed up had a chat and watched me sketch like a nervous chimp.

Sketch: Paradox Malt

My done thing at the moment seems to be coming across characters and stories i like and then having the burning urge to want to draw them. i guess it was inevitable that one of Mike Sizemore's characters jumped in front of me, put her gun to my head and POW! made me draw her.
Anyway here's is a sketch of Merica Adams from a spiffing 5minute short Sizemore and his team put together: PRECISION they put the film together in a mere 48 Hours. from working in the Film scene myself, both on sets and from the drawing board i know that is no easy task having so little time to get something looking so good.
A big factor that made me want to draw the character was the awesome sketches by Dave kennedy that came up at the credits depicting Merica in some bad ass situations. Nazi dinosaur = Very very Cool.
Also some behind scenes stuff here. I went along with my My Partner in Crime Laura Trinder to do some planning and mind melding for some books we're working on this year. we have got a lot down some big ideas for the rest of the year. dubbed "the year of doing"
This here is an sketch I did whilst at Ben's and then decided to carry it through to inking when Igot home. they are the protagonists of a series myself and Ben have planned for the coming year. Ben has some serious ideas for these guys, and they are about to go through one hell of a journey. Dream Solver is a heavy Dialogue book so I've been a little sparse on some background details but i think its should set it off ok when it has the letter art over the top.
the original page i couldn't even bare to spend the time colouring i wanted to re do it so bad so i didn't even attempt it. the newer panels also show that i've been using a brush pen a lot more. still not completely at home with that but it feels so nice and natural when it works. i need to add more shadow into these but another confidence factor i'm working on.
Before:Drawn 2009
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 164px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_1zPwfriADx0/TNmOgWcGJdI/AAAAAAAAA20/UlsrAMqIDOE/s320/Page%2B1.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5537613903259117010" />

After:Drawn 2010
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 173px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_1zPwfriADx0/TNmPNrEOaVI/AAAAAAAAA28/9UU-I6aPj_4/s320/Page.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5537614681890253138" />

Revamp Dream Solver

Apologies for yet another lack of posting. recently been very busy. taken on more than i can chew and burnt the candle from both ends to the core....but this has brought about it a plus.....finally some coloured work and plenty of it so without further ado!

Recently in light of the Insomnia fiasco's the Dream Solver team have been working to get together a new preview of the book, this time were going for a fully functioning Ebook preview and Longer than the last. So in true self depreciating artist style i have been going over the first chapter and killing any form of ego I'd built up over getting my first full comic job. and realizing that i had made quite a mess. i know this is typical for an artist to look over the old work and tear any form of love and pride down but its now over a year since the first 8 page preview we posted up on the Dream Solver blog and i feel like a totally different artist, the work has grown in both style and technique so looking back i can see the way i was and think what a shameful time!
Anyway. looking over the old stuff I've felt that i cant post up any of that work professionally without giving it a good once over re work some of the really bad flaws, some may be forgivable so its not a whole new book.
one page i re worked hit me and made me realize the big leap I've made since last year. and that would be the first page. after I'd re drawn it i too a lean back in the chair and it did feel good to look at then and now.

This is the original panel 2 of page 1 i drew summer of 2009
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 162px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_1zPwfriADx0/TNkfu2pIyWI/AAAAAAAAA2s/IW2ybwHDMGc/s320/Page%2B1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5537492106631235938" />

And this is a few weeks back. i think the comparison speaks for itself. the pose, style and neatness has taken a leap...i think/hope anyway.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 177px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_1zPwfriADx0/TNkfZdck8eI/AAAAAAAAA2k/Cn-CwlcgeRk/s320/Page%2B1%2BRedraw%2BCL.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5537491739090416098" />

More to come!

The Long Excuse: Rise of the Sleepless Phoenix

So I’ve been busy lately, actually found myself in a position where I’ve had more offers to work than I can take on, I'm not trying to blow my own trumpet or brag about it but its felt nice to be so busy in the work i love to do. so that’s another excuse for the long absence but over the next few posts I’ll go over what I’ve been doing recently and show some pretty pictures along the way!
Mainly I’ve been whip cracking at the comic book work, if you haven't been following the comic book realms then you may or may not of heard of the Demise of Insomnia Publications, unfortunately a book I’m working on DreamSolver was part of this Publisher and was caught in an inevitable "rights to" battle along with all the other creators and their children. So a fairly drawn out battle to force the hand of the appropriate head to officially excuse everyone and their projects from the Insomnia camp ensued.
Eventually we were released and Insomnia was no more.

Although out of this fray the creators Including the DreamSolver Camp of myself and Luke Foster joined forces to form the Group of 'The Sleepless Phoenix' mainly this group had the intention to re form and print up a short stories book originally intended to be published through Insomnia, funnily enough it had the Theme of Survival and was dubbed 'Survival Stories' The stars where far too perfectly aligned so we have seized the chance and created a Kickstarter plea website to get funding for the book and explain the story behind the book.
DreamSolver had intended to have a new preview go into this book and we'd pulled together a nice little section to be included in the original, so naturally we where quite gutted to be cut short of that opportunity to get some more audience for the book and our first printed proof of our work.
So I’ve done what I can do to help with the Survival stories book anyway, I’ve done a few pin ups and been assigned to do some sketches of the High Donators which they would get with they're own copy of the book.
The Pin ups I’ve done are from a personal selection of the short stories in the book. i tell thee no lie when I say there are some astounding shorts in that book, both in writing and Art, so I was glad to have the opportunity to pay some homage to the great work in that book. Here's a few of the Pin ups I’ve put into the book.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 232px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_1zPwfriADx0/TJkOf0kVT0I/AAAAAAAAA2c/xC6f_9PTAto/s320/NMLB.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5519458758169022274" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 232px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_1zPwfriADx0/TJkOff-ZCcI/AAAAAAAAA2U/VcuRjpZUgEg/s320/DS.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5519458752641173954" />

I’m not the only one to add some pin ups and sketches I’m sure, so I can only imagine the wad of creation this book is going to behold.
Since the kickstarter site was set up we smashed our goal and gone beyond the target! So right now if you haven't already thrown in some dosh I’m not sure if you can get a mail delivered copy or big bonus package, but you will be able to get a signed copy if you head to the Birmingham BICS this year so get to the table if you can and get yourself a copy and chat with some of the guys working the table.

I'm extremely happy and grateful to have been part of this creative collective who have shown nothing but passion and willingness to endure and prove their worth, I hope to work with these guys again.

Limbo and The Marquis

I've not posted for a couple of weeks on here.
